A quiet and peaceful local viewpoint could be opened up as a motorhome stopover site if a proposal put before the council gets approved.
Califer Viewpoint is one of 10 council sites suggested for overnight parking without toilet facilities for around £7 a night, including car parks at Burghead, Lossiemouth and Cullen.
It is understood the scheme would cost around £17,000 to put in place and could generate around £5000 a year.
The proposal will go before the Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee on February 4.
Califer Viewpoint is in an elevated position which looks down the farmland of the Laich o’ Moray, a low-lying stretch of land between Brodie and Fochabers.
A plaque shows the many landmarks that can be seen on a clear day, but most impressive is the full scope of Findhorn Bay, and the village of the same name which extends out onto the spit of land where the bay narrows before emptying into the Moray Firth.
From here you can also see, Blervie Castle, Findhorn Foundation, and many other local landmarks.
It’s a particularly peaceful spot, and recently characterised by an increasing number of trees planted in memory of people who have passed away.

£17,000 pounds to generate a £5000 annual income?
Which brain child thought this up?
It’ll take nearly t years to generate a profit minus the costs of keeping the site tidy.
The NC500 are actively discouraging motorhomes because of the litter & mess they leave like dumping the contents of their toilets at the side of the road.
Not in my name, no, I don’t want it, I oppose it.
We have a car park on Victoria road which is empty all night, why is it not being considered?
That would be a reasonable idea, the view point is a ridiculous idea. What are they spending the £17000 on???and 4 years before there’s a profit meanwhile spoiling the peace.
Dreadful, thoughtless proposal it is a quiet reflective place for memories not motorhomes!
Ridiculous, to suggest motorhomes use the road up to the viewpoint.
This is a completely unacceptable proposal. Califer viewpoint is a beautiful quiet spot that is full of memorials to local people. Allowing campervans to use the site for overnight parking would be sacrilege. All overnight parking should be banned at this site permenantly.
Terrible idea , the approach road is poor and it is a wonderful setting
No No No
Awfully idea road not suitable and it would stop local people being able to get access also where and who is going to clear up after these travelers look at the problem on grangehall road what’s that mess cost to clear up no way this should go forward
Totally unacceptable. Apart from the access issues and lack of servicing facilities, the site is the memorial and last resting place for the ashes, and memories, of many people who lived, worked and died in Forres. To bespoil this area as a camp site would be no better than pitching tents at Clovenside cemetery. What an appalling suggestion this is.
We had to provide a new passing place before being allowed to build next to the road up to Califer because of the increase in traffic we were going to generate. I presume then that the council will now provide many passing places to alleviate the increase in traffic. I presume also that the road will now be classed as a priority for gritting otherwise I see carnage at the bad bends halfway up the hill! And all this for £17,000?
Califer viewpoint is a place of outstanding natural beauty and a special place for many locals, it would be a disaster if this was turned in to a campsite!
This is a RAF memorial site! What an insult to all those who are celebrated there. Two camper vans meeting on the ‘Z’ bend will need extra space and add to the cost of £17,000 to create extra passing places. Please think again!
I do not agree with camper vans up at Viewpoint. The carpark is not that big. it is busy in the summer time with people going up for a peaceful quiet seat. How are you working out the payment system will car users have to pay too ? As everyone else says the road is not fit for that purpose.
Awful idea . What an eyesore ruining the beauty of the view for so many who enjoy and indeed live around there. A much loved site for some peace and tranquility.
The thought of poo bags never mind worse is abhorrent
Instead Save much needed Community Centre
The roads aren’t suitable for camper vans or caravans. It’s not a big site and the grassy area is full of trees dedicated to people’s loved ones who have died. Rubbish idea! East beach Findhorne?
Apart from the beauty that area affords, it is quite windy, and I don’t see it anyway, as a place people would like to stay! Hate the thought of the mess it would make of a beautiful (if windy spot with rubbish being blown everywhere else!). What warmth of hot will this presumed money give us anyway! Why always money rather than the value of an interactive community! We need more imagination in our planners!
Can’t belive what I’ve just read, £17,000 to raise a possable £5,000.
I agree with almost all that’s been said above, it’s a great wee place why spoil it with motor homes and caravans?
The cooncil have finally lost the plot again, wonder what their next idea 💡 will be?
I ken, charge everyone £1 when driving through Forres, Elgin and Kieth and any wee village in between, huv a wee person stood each side of the road to collect the money 💰.
