A rescue organisation that provides quick response to local shoreline emergencies has been given a Christmas boost with the announcement of a funding package.
Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation, based in Findhorn, has been awarded a sum by the Rescue Boat Grant Fund.
The fund, now in its fifth year, supports the work of charities which provide search and rescue services around the UK on coastal and inland waters and MIRO has benefitted in previous years.
Moray MP Douglas Ross welcomed a funding package and said: “I am delighted that MIRO which is run by volunteers and relies on fundraising to do its essential work, will benefit from the latest round of money being allocated by the Rescue Boat Grant Fund.
“The fund is administered by the Department of Transport and helps support vital services around the UK, such as the MIRO rescue boat, which carries out life-saving work around the Moray Firth area.
“I’m really pleased that the Minister has announced this cash injection of £27,055 for the rescue boat which I know will make a tremendous difference to them and help ensure they have the proper equipment to enhance their capacity to continue the outstanding work they do in our area.
“I have previously visited MIRO at their base in Findhorn and am hoping to get a chance to meet with them again in the New Year to congratulate them all on the work that they do.”
Scottish Secretary David Mundell added: “It is important that the brave volunteers who carry out this vital work and help keep water users safe are appropriately supported. The latest round of the UK Government’s Rescue Boat Grant fund provides that. The fund aids water searches, rescues and recoveries undertaken by local emergency teams.
“I welcome the news that Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation will receive funding from the UK Government in order to continue the vital work they carry out.”
