Coastal rescue team gets £1000 donation from proceeds of charity Poker Run event

Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (MIRO), based in Findhorn, have received a £1000 donation from funds raised by the Poker Run event recently held at Mr Moto in Forres.

MIRO volunteer, Mick Pumfrey, who also helped organise the Poker Run explained: “The Poker Run event held at Mr Moto is a point-to-point event.  Each rider has a score card and a playing card is drawn at each stop. The best hand wins a prize.”

This year the event raised over £4000. With other monies raised, the grand total increased to over £8000.  Money raised was donated to local charities, including a £1000 donation to MIRO.

Suzy Asher, Poker run organiser, said: “Thank you to MIRO volunteers,  Michael and Sean, and to the chairman of MIRO for giving us such an in depth tour of MIRO and showing us behind the scenes. We were amazed when we found out what the volunteers do to enable the charity to operate. If anyone is looking for a worthy charity to support, these guys are incredibly deserving.”

Organisers of the Poker Run event, Suzy, Pete, Nicole and Daz visited MIRO HQ at Findhorn Marina to present the cheque for £1000, where MIRO volunteers gave them a tour of the charity’s base and the MIRO rescue boat, The Glynn Whitehead III. They learned about how MIRO operates, the capabilities of the rescue boat and recent emergency call-outs that MIRO volunteers have attended.

MIRO chairman, John Low, said:  “We rely totally on donations to operate our rescue service and are so grateful to the organisers of the Poker Run event for choosing to raise funds for MIRO.

“We invited Suzy, Pete, Nicole and Daz to visit the MIRO base at Findhorn Marina so that they could have a closer look at the set up and our rescue boat, The Glynn Whitehead III.

“They were also able to see inside the cabin where the crew change and look at the kit they use when responding to an emergency call out.”

MIRO has responded to 15 emergency callouts so far this year.
