Forres Academy praised for ‘improved planning and leadership’ across school

Forres Academy has been praised by Education Scotland for a number of key improvements following a recent follow-up inspection visit.

Inspectors visited the school to check on progress made since the follow-up inspection in April 2024. Their latest report, published today (Tuesday 17 June), highlights positive steps taken by staff to improve leadership; learning and teaching; wellbeing support and pupil attainment.

The report highlights improved planning and leadership across the school, with senior and middle leaders now more focused on achieving better outcomes for young people. A new school vision, developed in partnership with staff, pupils and parents, is helping to provide a clearer sense of direction and purpose.

Teachers have introduced a new guide called “Forres Academy Learning and Teaching Essentials”, which is helping to create more consistent routines across the school. Staff are also working more closely together to share good practice, giving a stronger focus on improving the learning experience for all pupils.

Wellbeing

Support for pupil wellbeing has also improved. Better systems are now in place to help staff track and respond to individual needs. Young people spoke positively about the wellbeing support available, including nurture spaces, peer-led initiatives and lunchtime clubs. Inspectors encouraged the school to continue strengthening its anti-bullying approach to ensure all pupils feel safe and supported.

Work to raise attainment, particularly in the senior phase, is also ongoing. New systems are helping staff track progress more effectively and identify where extra support is needed.

Forres Academy’s Head Teacher, Jan Sinclair, commented: “We’re pleased that Education Scotland has recognised the progress made so far and the commitment of our staff and pupils. I’m confident we’re moving in the right direction and remain focused on delivering the best outcomes for every young person in our school. We know there’s more to do, and we’re continuing to build on the improvements already underway. I’d like to thank all staff, parents and carers for their ongoing support.”

Committed

Moray Council’s Chief Education Officer, Vivienne Cross, added: “It’s encouraging to see Education Scotland acknowledge several important improvements at Forres Academy and to express confidence in the school’s capacity to continue making progress. I know staff and leaders have already taken forward a number of key activities to support pupils as part of the new timetable and induction period, which is a really positive step. We remain committed to supporting the school to build on this progress and ensure the best outcomes for all learners.”

Education Scotland will return within 18 months to carry out a further inspection, allowing time to see the impact of the work so far. In the meantime, Moray Council will continue to work closely with Forres Academy to support its improvement efforts.
