Buffalo farm moving into retail and tourism with farm shop and straw bale cabins

A new farm shop shack at the roadside in Dallas is selling its produce directly to consumers, as it begins a programme of diversification.

Thorabella is one of only two buffalo farms in Scotland, and as well as meat from its core herd, you’ll also find Highland beef, pork, eggs and honey.

The farm is also building three straw bale cabins to provide accommodation on a live working farm, with a unique feature – marsupials in the back garden!

As well as rearing Asian Water Buffalo, the farm also has a variety of animals including Highland Cattle, sheep, Pygmy Goats, Kunekune pigs, chickens, rabbits and wallabies.

If you want to get a closer look at how this farm works, or see the animals, they are holding an open day on 17 June from 11am till 3pm (see map below for directions).

In the video above, Ollie Lake, who runs the farm with his wife Nikki, explains why they chose Buffalo, and what else they are doing to diversify.

The shack is open from 9am to 7pm daily, and takes cash, PayPal or bank transfer.
