Work starts on restoring 175-year-old ‘high street jewel’

The Mercat Cross is finally getting a makeover.

The scaffolding is going up around it today and work will be carried out to fix the stonework which has been crumbling for a few years.

The Category B listed structure was built in 1844 and modelled on the Scott Memorial in Edinburgh by Thomas Mackenzie. It was described recently by councillor George Alexander as one of our ‘high street jewels’.
