Steph and Sue name new Knockomie coffee shop in memory of their beloved Kevan

A new cafe has been named in memory of a man who died after ‘coming home’ to Forres.

K’s Coffee Shop will open on the Knockomie estate this month run by sisters-in-law Stephanie Wallace and Sue Farish, and named after their beloved brother and husband respectively.

Kevan Farish moved back to Forres in December 2021 with his wife Sue after 22 years in Reading, but sadly died of a heart attack the following March.

Sue and Stephanie had both dreamed of operating a coffee shop, and when they saw the building at Falconer Avenue become available, they jumped at the chance.

Stephanie said: “We wanted to remember Kevan, and this was a perfect chance. He was a coffee lover and a bit of a snob about it, so we’d like to think he’d give us his blessing.

The pair have been busy converting it from a furniture shop, putting in a kitchen, toilets and serving area.

Stephanie said: “The sign is up, and we’re just about ready to open. All we’re waiting on is the go-ahead from the council. We’ll be open from 7:30am to catch the early birds, and we’ll be open at weekends too.”

UPDATE: The council has given K’s Coffee Shop the go-ahead and they will open on Monday 10 July.

The building was recently occupied by Design Floors who have now reduced its footprint to one half of the unit.

Sue explained that the building was originally designated as two separate units, and that Design Floors had taken both and made them into one.

Passing traffic

“It’s a busy road, the co-op next door generates a lot of traffic, and we have a car park and paved area for outside eating when the weather’s good enough.”

The cafe will seat 20, and offers coffee, cakes, snacks and sandwiches, etc. Sue and Stephanie sourced their kitchen equipment from Calum Main from Calum’s Kitchen, and were Barista-trained by Cameron Chase who is now the local rep for Matthew Algie coffee.

They’ll offer a range of vegan and gluten-free options, and willbake their own cakes. Scones will be supplied by Susan’s Splendid Cakes. There’s a designated children’s play area, and well-behaved dogs will also be welcome.

The pair have also thanked local tradespeople, Ian Mackenzie, Will Munro, Dave Mackintosh, Kevin Netherwood, Gary Eastwood, and architect Susan Longmuir, for their work to get the coffee shop ready.

Flooring was provided by their new neighbour Design Floors, and signs were made and fitted by Joe of Signed Graphics.

Opening hours will be 7:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm on Saturday, and 9:30am to 4pm on Sunday.
