Work to restore a town centre monument is nearling completion.
Scaffolding has gone up again around the Mercat Cross at the very heart of Forres. Stonemason’s have returned to replace four finials that were removed as they started to crumble.
George Alexander, a trustee with the Forres Heritage Trust said: “This is the final step in returning the Mercat Cross to its full glory.
“After many years of crumbling stonework, today should see the completion of this work, which is to fit four newly carved finials to replace ones that were removed for safety reasons many years ago. “
The work is being carried out by G Laing Stonecraft, who also carried out essential repair work to Nelson’s Tower in recent weeks, and the cost has been covered by funding identified by Moray Council.
The Mercat Cross has marked the centre of town since it was built in 1844. More information on the cross’s history can be found at Visit Forres.
