LETS do it! Revived cashless trading system helps communities work together

A community-driven currency that once thrived in Forres has been relaunched.

LETS, or Local Exchange Trading System, alows people to buy and sell goods and services by swapping skills rather than cash.

And this time round, it is broadening its reach to the whole of Moray, and has been rebranded New Moray LETS.

The relaunch of the scheme is breathing new life into a system that once had neighbours trading skills, services, and goods, completely money-free. 

At the helm of its revival is Brant Bambery, a new Project Development Manager. Originally from Edinburgh and now a proud Moray resident, Brant has experience in teaching, planning, and community engagement.

He said: “Imagine a time when a dedicated gardener would swap her extra vegetables with retired carpenter for a little help around the house.

Tapestry of trust

“These simple exchanges not only meet practical needs but also wove a tapestry of trust and friendship throughout the community.

“One inspiring local story tells of a member who, by trading everything from gardening to tutoring, earned enough Lets to buy a car, all through the power of community exchange.” 

“LETS are a simple, sustainable, and inclusive way to trade without cash. With over 400 networks and more than 20,000 members across the UK, LETS is proving that when communities come together, everyone benefits. “

A Spring Trade Fair at Forres Town Hall is set for 1 March starting at 2pm, and this is a chance to meet the team, explore a variety of local talents, crafts and even showcase your own skills. 

And a new community noticeboard has been put up at Forres House Community Centre, with updates, events, and key information.
