Christmas rules tightened to stem the spread of new Covid-19 strain

The Scottish Government has urgently reviewed its rules for the festive period due to a sudden increase in the prevalence of a new variant of Covid-19.

In Scotland, eight people from three households can still meet indoors, but now only on Christmas Day, not the five-day period previously advised, and people are urged to meet only if necessary.

Travel between Scotland and the rest of the UK is not permitted. Anyone visiting another household on Christmas Day must arrive and leave on that day.

The whole of mainland Scotland will go into Level 4 lockdown, the highest tier closing all non-essential shops, from Boxing Day for three weeks.
