Mosset bridge to be closed for ‘several years’ following structural assessment

A road bridge crossing the Mosset Burn will be closed for the ‘long term’ after failing a structural assessment.

The Lea Bridge which connects Invererne Road and Lea Road is to be closed to vehicular traffic in the coming weeks. The bridge will be kept open to pedestrians and cyclists and the condition monitored as an ongoing process.

The footbridge immediately upstream will also be closed due to corrosion of the deck. The south footbridge will remain open for now with monitoring of its condition also in place. Please refer to the map overleaf for more information.

109th on prioritisation list

All works for bridges are undertaken in line with Moray Council’s Bridge Maintenance Prioritisation Policy, which prioritises work based on condition and strategic importance.

A Moray Council spokesperson said: “

Lea Bridge is currently rated 109th on the prioritisation list, therefore, it is highly unlikely that work to replace the bridge will be funded for several years.

The bridge has had a sign saying ‘weak bridge’ and a weight limit of 3 tonnes for several years. Now work to install suitable barriers and signage for the long-term closure of this bridge will be undertaken in the next few weeks.

  1. Closing this is accessible for wheelchairs, but they are saying you can use the other bridge, which is a joke; it’s not wheelchair friendly because of the steps on one side
