Forres properties throw doors open for chance to visit local landmarks

Doors Open Day is back in Moray on Saturday 13 September 2025 and there’s plenty of properties in the Forres area giving locals and visitors the chance to explore the region’s history and heritage for free.

From historic estates and castles to community halls and iconic towers, the event offers a unique opportunity to discover hidden gems across Moray.

Forres features prominently with venues such as Nelson’s Tower, Forres and District Men’s Shed, St Laurence Church, Forres Town Hall.

This year, visitors can step inside Altyre Estate Clubroom and Chapel to admire its 19th-century Tuscan-style design, wander the grounds of Brodie Castle, or visit the ruins of the Abbot’s House at Kinloss Abbey, a short drive from the town.

Further afield

Further afield, you can the Elgin Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court to get a rare glimpse of Moray’s legal history.

Lossiemouth is also opening its doors with the Fisheries and Community Museum offering a glimpse into the town’s seafaring past, while St Margaret’s Episcopal Church, built in 1911 and known for its striking stained glass, welcomes visitors to learn more about its congregation’s naval traditions.

Tomintoul Parish Church will also be open throughout the day. The church sits at the heart of the village and provides a window into the history of one of Moray’s most scenic communities.

Doors Open Day is not just about exploring buildings; it’s about connecting with the community and celebrating the stories that make Moray unique. Visitors can meet local volunteers, hear the histories behind each site, and enjoy a day discovering the heritage on their doorstep.

Admission to all venues is free.
