Forres woman makes urgent appeal to help earthquake victims

A woman who has had sleepless nights worrying about the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria is doing her bit to send aid.

Rayne Gadalla, who works as a classroom assistant at Logie Primary School, has set up a collection point for clothing and care essentials on the high street, and says she’s been overwhelmed by the number of people who have got in touch.

She said: “I’ve been following it on the news and the images are so harrowing I just couldn’t sleep at night thinking about all those people laying under the rubble.”

“I contacted Inverness Mosque and they put me in touch with a Turkish man in Alness who is collecting and transporting goods to the Turkish Consul through Imam Vali Hussein in Dundee. Everything will go directly to the people in need.”

Donations

“Tesco is very keen to help, and they’re making a donation today.

“Highland Army Surplus supply has been very supportive and is giving me warm winter clothes at a discount rate.”

Rayne has also received £300 in cash and is trying to negotiate discounts for bulk purchases.

She wanted to thank everyone who has already contributed and said she was overwhelmed with support, even from outside Forres.

So much so, that she’s already filled the huge boot of her American sedan, a Chrysler New Yorker, but now faces the problem of needing more help to transport the collection on Thursday.

More transport needed

Rayne has asked that if anyone has a van or can offer space in a vehicle for the trip to Dundee on Thursday to contact her.

Wednesday is the last day to donate, as all items collected will be driven south on Thursday. The following items have been requested:

  • Baby clothes
  • Baby formula milk
  • Nappies.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Warm jackets (especially children’s)
  • Sleeping bags
  • Blankets
  • Tents

She will also take cash donations and use the money to buy essentials.

The drop-off point is at The Bike Bothy on the High Street, which is run by Rayne’s fiance Kevin Riddoch.

Rayne has also offered to collect if you cannot drop off.
