Apple’s hi-tech sensor puts Forres on the 3D map

Mapmakers building a hi-tech 3D map of the UK passed through Forres today as they collected thousands of images for the next version of Apple Maps.

Covering every road in the town, the camera, mounted on a Vauxhall Astra is strikingly similar to the Google Maps car.

The driver of the mapping car, spotted in the town around lunchtime, said that as well as cameras, their car was fitted with three Lidar 3D sensors, which scans its surroundings to build a 3D version of the map.

The Apple Maps car is pictured here passing Sueno’s Stone, which was probably used to keep people on the right road for more than 1000 years. We’re hoping Apple’s version will be much easier to carry around.
