Tours of the town’s landmark Tolbooth will be available from this Saturday, and will include access to the clocktower and magnificent views across the town.
The Tolbooth clocktower offers rooftop views to the north, south, east and west with an unobstructed vista over the high street, Market Square and Mercat Cross.
But the views are not the only attraction. The Tolbooth’s historical use as a courtroom, police station and jail are all part of the 60-minute experience that the Forres Heritage Trust has been working on.
The tours are being conducted by volunteers on a Thursday and Saturday, and will include:
- Old police cells complete with ‘apparatus’
- Having your fingerprints taken and a mugshot
- Visit the refurbished historic courtroom
- Clocktower stairs and outside viewing point
Forres Heritage Trust chairman George Alexander said: “It is very much a six-week trial on Saturdays and Thursdays only and visitors must book. Once we see how volunteers cope then we will look at possibly increasing availability of tours.”
Tours will cost £5 and can be booked by phoning George on 07875 034220.
